To get the most out of Alabama’s scenery, history, and motorcycle-friendly culture, make sure you understand the state’s rules of the road and have a motorcycle insurance policy that keeps you covered.

What is required of all motorcycle riders in Alabama?

To legally operate a motorcycle in Alabama, you must be at least 16 years of age with a Class M driver’s license. Here are a few motorcycle laws to follow when you’re out on the road:

  • Helmet: All riders and passengers are required to wear a helmet.

  • Handlebars: Your motorcycle’s handlebars cannot be more than 15 inches higher than your seat.

  • Mirrors: Your motorcycle must have at least one mirror; it can be on either the left or right side.

  • Headlights: Your motorcycle must have a modulating daytime headlight.

  • Passenger seat and foot pegs: All passengers must have a dedicated seat and footrests or foot pegs.

  • Lane sharing: A maximum of two motorcycles are permitted to share the same lane.

  • Lane splitting: Lane splitting is illegal in Alabama, as are any other maneuvers that involve weaving in and out of traffic.

What are the motorcycle insurance requirements in Alabama?

You’re required to carry motorcycle insurance in Alabama, and you’ll need to show proof of insurance when registering your motorcycle. These requirements include bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

Here are the minimum insurance coverages to legally ride in Alabama:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury liability per person

  • $50,000 for bodily injury liability for two or more persons

  • $25,000 for property damage liability

Keep in mind that if you’re involved in an accident in which the resulting damages exceed these required minimums, you could end up paying the remainder out of pocket. Selecting higher motorcycle insurance limits can help protect you and your assets.

Does Alabama have any optional motorcycle insurance coverage?

Yes. In addition to the minimum liability insurance coverages listed above, we offer several optional coverages at affordable rates, including:

Comprehensive coverage

If you need repairs after your motorcycle is damaged by something other than a collision, comprehensive motorcycle insurance can help you with the costs. This coverage can apply to events like theft, vandalism, and even hail damage.

Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage

Approximately 12 percent of drivers nationwide are uninsured. And in Alabama, the uninsured rate is even higher, at 19.5 percent. That means nearly one out of every five motorists you encounter as you ride through Alabama is uninsured. What would happen if you were involved in an accident with one of those uninsured drivers?

In cases like these, UM insurance can help cover bodily injury costs and other expenses that would normally be covered by an insured at-fault driver’s policy.
