California Highway 36: A twisting serpentine to the sea

California Highway 36 offers a worthy ride not just for its curvy route, but also its diverse landscapes. Heading to the coast from I-5, this 140-mile route starts in Red Bluff and typically takes around four hours to get you to Fortuna, just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean. While the distance isn’t overly long, the twisty road makes for a fun and leisurely ride.

Before you start, fill your gas tank in Red Bluff and make sure to take a picture with the famous sign: “Tight Curves—Next 140 Miles.” You can also refuel and grab a bite at the newly renovated Dibble Creek Outpost, about five miles from Red Bluff. These are your last gas stops until Dinsmore, 90 miles into the route. After Dinsmore, you’ll pass through small communities like Platina, Forest Glen, and Bridgeville.

If you want to extend the trip, start east of I-5 near Susanville, adding about 105 miles to your ride and the opportunity to experience Lassen National Forest.
